Benefits of Warehouse Management Systems
Warehouses have been an integral part of business for almost as long as business has existed, and so have the problems associated with running those warehouses. Just as computers have helped ease the strain in other areas of business, they can help in this one too. Warehouse management systems (WMS) are systems of software specifically designed to help a warehouse operate more smoothly. More specifically, a warehouse management system’s primary purpose is to monitor and control the acquisition and movement of materials or products in a warehouse.
Modern warehouse management systems are extremely complex pieces of software with many features that can aid with the running of a warehouse. They can be used in conjunction with a barcode scanner system, for example, for easier tracking of stock levels, and some of them can even automate much of the ordering process based on the current levels of stock. Some warehouse management systems will even have a subset of the human resource functionality typically found in a larger enterprise resource planning (ERP) system for tracking the employees and payroll of the warehouse, or may even have a supplier or customer tracking module built in.
At the core of any warehouse management system is a relational database that stores all the information on the particular products or materials that your business deals in. The system will provide a user-friendly interface for interacting with the database for inserting new records, updating records, printing reports, and many other tasks. Once the data has been computerized a wide range of functions can be performed on that data with the minimum of time and effort, streamlining your warehouse’s activities and making it more productive. For example, generating reports on just about anything is usually as simple as a couple of mouse clicks with a good WMS, so it will become easier than ever to get a summary view of your warehouse’s operation.
Since every warehouse is unique and has its own set of requirements and business practices, a warehouse management system is usually developed from the ground up by a software company specializing in this field. This means you cannot simply go to the local computer store and pick up a WMS but instead have to hire a company to build one for you. The upshot of this is that although it may cost more than the regular software that you are used to buying, your WMS will be tailored exactly to the needs of your business and the list of requirements that you decide, meaning it will do whatever you want or need it to do. The increase in productivity of your warehouse over time will usually vastly outweigh the cost of having a WMS developed.
As you can no doubt see by now, a warehouse management system is pretty much a necessity for any medium to large scale warehouse to run smoothly. You shouldn’t allow all those menial resource management tasks to take up more time than necessary and interfere with the running of your business when it is so easy to get software that can automate it for you.
